MCT Formula for ulcers in horses

All fats and oils are composed of fat molecules called fatty acids. There are two methods of classifying fatty acids. The one we are most familiar is based on saturation. We know saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The second method of classification is based on molecular size or length of the carbon chain in fatty acids. Another term you will often see in reference to fatty acids is triglycerides. Three fatty acids joined together make a triglyceride, so you may have short-chain triglycerides, medium-chain triglycerides or long chain triglycerides.

The vast majority of oils that horses eat come from plant sources and are composed of long-chain triglycerides. MCT-Formula is unique because it is composed predominately of medium- chain triglycerides. The size of the fat in MCT-Formula is extremely important, because physiological effects of medium-chain fatty acids are distinctly different from long-chain fatty acids commonly fed to horses.

Because the medium-chain triglycerides are smaller, they require less energy and fewer enzymes to break them down for digestion than other fats you are currently feeding.
